How Does Ketamine Therapy Help Treat Mental Health Disorders?

The FDA initially approved ketamine in the 1970s for anesthetic purposes. (4) It was later found to be able to reduce anxiety and depression, leading to its use to help treat mental health disorders. Due to Ketamine being soluble in both water and lipids, it can be administered through various routes. (5)

Ketamine administration routes include: (6)

  • Intramuscular (IM)
  • Intravenous (IV)
  • Oral
  • Nasal
  • Epidural
  • Rectal
  • Subcutaneous

There are some additional administration routes. However, they are only utilized when deemed necessary.

The effects that Ketmina produces are what makes it effective in treating mental health symptoms and concerns. (7)

Ketamine side effects include: (8)

  • Pain control
  • Amnesia
  • Dissociation
  • Relaxation
  • Euphoria

The precise mechanism regarding how ketamine treats mental health conditions is not yet wholly understood, but it is believed to involve several different processes. For post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it has been found that ketamine blocks a brain receptor involved in forming and maintaining traumatic memories. (9)

Ketamine may also promote the development of new brain cells and improve the connectivity between brain regions involved in regulating and processing mood and emotions. This may help decrease depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders.

How Do I Know if Ketamine Therapy Would Help With My Depression?

Ketamine is typically used to help treat symptoms of mental health concerns after other options have been employed. Ketamine is generally used after other long-established treatment options have not been effective. The drug affects different parts of the brain than other medications used to treat depression, such as SSRIs, so it can be beneficial for those who have not seen improvement with other medications. Guardian Recovery can work with you to customize an individualized treatment plan depending on your diagnosis and specific treatment objectives.

What to Expect During Ketamine Treatment

During ketamine therapy sessions, the patient is seated or reclined in a chair or bed. The ketamine is administered through IV infusion, or the Spravto Ketamine option is utilized, with sessions lasting 45 minutes to several hours, depending on various factors.

The patient is then closely supervised to ensure safety, and vital signs, such as heart rate and blood pressure, are monitored for adverse effects. They will be supervised for a period to ensure their health is stable, and they may also be given a post-treatment evaluation by the healthcare provider to assess their response. They may also work with the patient to devise a treatment plan, including follow-ups and ongoing monitoring.
